Old Glory Flag When and where does the US flag originate? The design is believed to have been made by Francis Hopkinson who was also credited with the designs of United States original currencies. The flag was sewn by Betsy Ross. When and why has it evolved?  Note eras of significant and permanent change.   Note the lack of any big change, if you find that’s the case. The most notable and frequent changes to the flag are the number of stars found in the upper left corner. Each star is meant to represent a state forming a ‘new constellation’. A feature of the flag which always remained is the 13 alternating red and white stripes. What factors have shaped the look of the flag, including the shapes, colors, and arrangements of stars, stripes, red, white blue, etc.?  Is there a history and purpose to these graphic design choices?
