Old Glory Flag

When and where does the US flag originate?

The design is believed to have been made by Francis Hopkinson who was also credited with the
designs of United States original currencies. The flag was sewn by Betsy Ross.

When and why has it evolved?  Note eras of significant and permanent change.
Note the lack of any big change, if you find that’s the case.

The most notable and frequent changes to the flag are the number of stars
found in the upper left corner. Each star is meant to represent a state forming a
‘new constellation’. A feature of the flag which always remained is the 13
alternating red and white stripes.

What factors have shaped the look of the flag, including the shapes, colors,
and arrangements of stars, stripes, red, white blue, etc.?  Is there a history
and purpose to these graphic design choices?

Most flags have their colors and patterns to symbolize their country the US flag
is no exception. The stars in the upper left are meant to represent a new constellation.
The thirteen stripes represent the 13 colonies.

For what is the flag a symbol?  Does consensus about the meaning of the flag appear to be
fairly widespread?  How can you tell? Does it seem to be widely understood as a positive
symbol of national unity?

The flag is meant to represent the unification of the separate states as one sovereign country.

What are the flag’s nicknames?  What can you learn about where those nicknames
originate in our culture?

The nickname ‘Old Glory’ is given due to a flag owned by naval captain William Driver.
The massive flag was kept safe during the civil war the displayed in the Smithsonian.

What can you learn about the flag in popular music?  Consider songs, genres, album covers,
and lyrics.

The most well known song is the strangulated banner inspired by a poem wrote about the flag flying over Fort McHenry.

Habits/Use

The flag has several rules associated with it including that the flag is to fly from sunrise to sunset. When a major event such as the death of an official or tragedy happens the flag should fly at half mast.

Controversy

There are controversies involving the flag with some people saying the flag that represents unity does not represent the country its associated with.
